Mini Retro Review: Gloria (1999) #badmovies

Gloria
1999
Crime Drama Thriller

A film that nobody asked for it to be remade and should never have been given the go-ahead to do so, Sidney Lumet's version of Gloria is further proof why most movie remakes are bad and thus, do not stand up to the original. Devoid of the essence that made 1980s Gloria great, this thriller had little to no effect on me and I didn't feel a single thing for it. It is, unnecessary, inadequate and misplaced. Film follows the same routine, kid's family is murdered by some mobsters, blah, blah, blah. No real tension or grittiness felt, no thrills and the synergy between Stone and the boy just wasn't there, unlike the original. The story is lifeless with hardly any scenes that excited me, it felt like the director was regurgitating the same stuff in the original - that, and the tone was so 'off', I didn't like it. The writer added in F-words to make up for the lack of tension, which didn't work. Sharon Stone's Brooklyn accent sounds weird when she speaks and her turn was as if it was an imitation of Geena Rowlands character, moreso than as a character in her own right, and the actor playing the boy was uninspired and lacked believability. It was nowhere as good as John Adames performance.

Is It Worth Seeing?

I'd skip this and stick with the original thanks.
